The longest reigning WWE Champion in recent memory has been working hurt for quite some time now. He has injured his knee and ankle, which is why he hasn't wrestled full matches over the last number of weeks (barring NOC PPV). The Ryback attack is supposed to give him a few, much needed weeks of rest.
His contract expires next summer and WWE has already been trying to get him signed again. However, this is not a 2011 story where he would do a lot just to get a better deal and role. Punk does need to have time off and would like to get it next summer if possible. So, you could expect to see the last of Punk for a while in the summer of 2014.
