Curtis Axel vs. R-Truth at WWE Battleground

After defeating Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel in a non-title match on the Sept. 30 episode of Raw, R-Truth declared he was ready for a title opportunity. Well, ask — and impress — and you shall receive. At WWE Battleground this Sunday, Oct. 6, The Rapping Superstar battles Axel for the prestigious Intercontinental Title.

Sunday’s bout is Truth’s first time challenging for a championship in nearly a year, as Stephanie McMahon highlighted on the Sept. 23 edition of Raw, derisively asking, “When is the last time you had a championship match? I can’t remember.” Motivated by Stephanie’s words and promising to bring a different attitude, the dancing, fun-loving WWE fan favorite could be primed to claim the illustrious title.
For third-generation Superstar Axel, meanwhile, this is an opportunity not only to continue his rapid WWE ascent, but also to avenge his Raw loss and extend his reign beyond an already remarkable 100-plus days. With each successful defense, he inches closer to his legendary WWE Hall of Famer father, Mr. Perfect, who held the Intercontinental Championship for more than 400 combined days.

In addition to the intriguing clash of styles — namely Truth’s electrifying athleticism and the champion’s brutally technical grappling — Axel’s role as a “Paul Heyman Guy” could factor into the contest. With the Heyman-CM Punk rivalry growing increasingly intense and bitter, it is possible that Punk, his Battleground opponent Ryback, Heyman or some other outside force could affect Sunday’s Intercontinental Title Match. After all, it was The Best in the World’s entrance music blaring out on Raw this past Monday that distracted Axel and gave Truth the window he needed to pick up the win.
Was that victory a one-time fluke? Or, can R-Truth defeat Axel again with the Intercontinental Championship on the line? To find out who “gets got” as a result of this high-stakes battle, watch the inaugural WWE Battleground, live on pay-per-view this Sunday, Oct. 6, at 8 ET/5 PT.
