Two-time former WWE Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio recently spoke to the Austin Chronicle, and he talks about how the crowd cheered when he faced down Batista.Del Rio and Batista were involved in a twitter feud, that eventually made its way to TV. The night Batista returned, Del Rio confronted him, and attacked:
That night, I was the favorite for all of them. I was doing everything to get a boo from the crowd. I was destroying Batista that night, kicking and punching him, taking him to the limit, but the WWE universe cheers who they like.
The original plan was for Batista to enter into a face role coming into the company. However, the crowd refused to buy it, booing Batista from the very start. This took WWE officials off guard and forced them to move plans to turn Batista heel up to now.
Del Rio continues in his interview talking about how he broke the trend that all Mexican wrestlers are luchadores.
When I came to the WWE, I remember people saying Alberto is the biggest Mexican we’ve ever seen.
Del Rio was brought in to be the WWE’s top Latino talent. He has already had a long, successful career in Mexico under the “Dos Caras”. Previous reports have indicated, that he may be getting ready to finish up his career in the US, once his current contract is up. Whether he will retire, or return to Mexico to wrestle is unknown. Del Rio was brought in because he’s an established talent, and they were in need of a top Latino figure. Del Rio had a modicum of success with his two reigns, but ultimately failed to get over like they had hoped. Despite being a heel for the time being, Del Rio still wants to be a face the Latino community can get behind.
As long as the Latin audience keeps supporting the WWE, the WWE will support the Latin audience.
Back in February, Alberto Del Rio had talked about leaving the company, due to being frustrated after going from being a top guy, to what he considers to be someone being jobbed to Batista. Due to his massive success in Mexico, and his age (he is 36), it is looking like Del Rio will be finished up soon with the WWE.
