You read the headline correctly. Throughout all the hoopla to come out about CM Punk, this might be the most interesting of situations. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Punk is expected to return tomorrow night on Monday Night Raw in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois.
CM Punk is expected to return at tomorrow night’s Raw in Chicago, Illinois, according to Dave Meltzer on today’s edition of Wrestling Observer Radio (listen here).
While Meltzer won’t say he’s 100% sure Punk will be at the show, his source, who he says is “one of the biggest stars in the industry,” said that it’s 100% certain.
Punk has been absent from WWE programming since the Raw following the Royal Rumble on Jan. 27. Meltzer reported Punk had legitimately left the event after telling Vince McMahon he was “going home.” By the following Wednesday, the official WWE website stopped advertising Punk for future events. The matter was publicly acknowledged by McMahon on Feb. 20 during a quarterly conference call to investors, with the the CEO replying to a query concerning his status: “He’s taking a sabbatical, let’s just put it that way.”
If that is true, then WWE would’ve landed a home run in getting him to come back to early. When Punk took his sabbatical, it was expected that he may never come back and just rest for the remainder of his contract. His contract ends in July of this year.
He hasn’t been treated very well on-screen either, which led to his impending walk-out. A lot of reports talked about why he left, where he left to, how long he was going to be gone and what would make him come back. Those questions and more were circulating more than a “John Cena heel turn” article.
By leaving, Punk literally took the wrestling world by storm. Nobody cared about Hulk Hogan returning. It was all about the Straight Edge Savior.
Hopefully, as a huge Punk supporter, this report is true and we can all go back to watching Monday Night Raw with glee. Yet, this is only the first report that we saw, but it is from Dave Meltzer. For those who are familiar, he usually reports the truth.
We will keep you up to date as information comes in.
