After CM Punk walked out on his peers when he left the arena only a half hour before the January 27 episode of Raw came on the air, the fans eyed Chicago for his return.
The fans were floored that he walked out in the first place, but they thought, “how could he miss the Chicago show?” Now, here we are and CM Punk missed the March 3 episode of Raw in Chicago.
The fans were chanting his name and the WWE teased the crowd with mentions of his name and the playing of his theme music, but he wasn’t there. The realization set in at that moment for many fans that it may be a while before we see CM Punk back in the WWE ring.
There’s even the possibility that we may not see him at all, but many fans are still holding out hope in the back of their mind for a Wrestlemania return from the “Best in the World.” As a matter of fact, there’s a certain writer here at Wrestling News Depot that predicted that Punk was going to miss the Chicago show and would return at Wrestlemania 30 from the beginning.
There’s a possibility too though that we may not see CM Punk return to WWE before his contract expires in July. There’s apparently a belief internally that CM Punk may be done with professional wrestling for good.
As a fan of CM Punk, this is hard for me to say but it may be time that the fans accept the fact that he may never return. Despite his long career in professional wrestling, he does have other interests. He’s a big fan of mixed martial arts and he’s a regular on the Talking Dead show on AMC.
It’s quite possible that he is burnt out from the WWE schedule to the point that he never wants to go back to it and who could blame him? He’s a guy that has always been outspoken and he cares about his status in the company. He wants to be the World Champion, he wants to be the main attraction, he wants to be the main event of Wrestlemania. It’s surely frustrating to a man like himself when a part-timer like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson or Batista are able to come in and take that spot away from him.
CM Punk has saved his millions and after dealing with a frustrating creative process in the WWE, it may be time for him to try out something new. He has publicly acknowledged as well in the past that he could easily see himself disappearing and living in some remote location somewhere cut off from the rest of the world.
He never considered himself a lifer in the wrestling business and as a matter of fact, he’s already been in it longer than he thought he would be at age 35. Is CM Punk being attacked outside the ring by Kane during the 2014 Royal Rumble match going to be the last image we’re going to see of the “Straight Edge” superstar in the WWE?
Perhaps it’s time to accept that it might be.
